In the square of an unnamed Danish town, we follow a number of people as they go about their daily business, big and small: The police officer tries to find out whether the Christmas tree seller has a "permit" to sell Christmas trees, the bicycle repairman invents a new kind of bicycle, the baker's assistant and the chimney sweep are in love, and the barber is working on a rug made of hair. Meanwhile, the Christmas tree seller sits carving small wooden figures and talking to everyone who passes by. The dramatic main story is that a modern entrepreneur wants to tear down all the old buildings in the square and replace them with a modern parking lot. Each section ends with the characters gathering around Ella's hot dog stand and singing along with the courtyard musicians.

The last time we met Tinka, she introduced the Collection, where representatives from the four regions of the Kingdom of the Gnomes and a single person together ruled and decided. However, the new form of government does not work as Tinka had hoped, and she has therefore begun to doubt her abilities as the leader of the elves. There is a lot going on in Svingen in December, some things are quite common Christmas traditions, while others are a little more special. The children celebrate Lucia Day, the annual ski relay takes place, there is a competition to find the most beautiful Christmas tree, huge quantities of gingerbread are baked, the children go caroling, they rescue a fox that has been hit by a car, and they build a snow castle and end up in a real fight with the Sletta gang.
